On a distinctly un-summery day (who knew that it could rain in Northern Ireland?), with light and fickle breezes, 12 committed teams came to the start line. Unusually, with no Waverleys or dinghies, it was the Glens who set off first, with Glen Cuan quickly pulling out to a strong lead.
Then the pursuit began. First the solitary River Strule, then Sonatas, Flying Fifteens and two cruisers – Cascade and Zeelander.
In the conditions, it did seem harsh that the Commodore’s flagship started last alongside the Fifteens.
And very soon, it was clear that they were indeed flying through the fleet, with Emma Pierce, crewed by Andrea McMullan, leading the charge. With time to spare, they eased into the lead but then, as the clock ticked down to the 1630 finish time, the wind died. The chasing pack spread left and right, hoping for the fortunate gust which would bring glory.
But justice prevailed, Emma and Andrea held their nerve and crossed the line deserving winners and 2026 Champions of Champions.
Runners up were Peter and Juliet Kennedy also in a Flying Fifteen, followed by the McGimpsey-Pollock Sonata Cockahoop.
