We are a welcoming, family-friendly club for all ages and abilities.

We aim to foster a love of sailing and to preserve the beauty of Strangford Lough for future generations.

From a modest clubhouse in 1935 to a premier sailing hub, SLYC has grown through tradition and innovation. With new classes, major regattas, and a passion for the sea, our legacy continues.

1934
The first annual general meeting of the Snipe Sailing Club at Whiterock, where is was agreed to lease a plot of land and build a clubhouse.
1935
The officially opening of the first Clubhouse based at Whiterock, home to the Snipe Sailing Club.
1936
The Snipe Sailing Club and River Class come together to form Strangford Lough Yacht Club.
1937
The original Cluhouse is replaced by a much more substantial building, designed by Phillip Bell.
1949
The first Glen arrived at SLYC
1953
The Flying Fifteen class was established
1956
Several dinghies arrived at the Club and a cadet class was established.
1960
SLYC establishes itself as one of the leading yacht clubs in Northern Ireland.
1970
The club had developed a fleet of over 30 Flying Fifteens.
1980
The battery is moved to Transnagh to accommodate more boats on the start line.
2000
The 1937 Clubhouse is replaced by the current building and officially opened by HRH Princess Anne.
2001
Further development of training at SLYC with significant funding from the Lottery.
2019
SLYC celebrates its 85th anniversary and is awarded RYANI Club of the Year.
