Tuesday Dinghy Racing
Every Tuesday night there is club racing for dinghies of all types single and double handed and although it is more competitive that Sunday mornings it is good fun and all those who are racing on Sunday mornings are encouraged to come along and have a go. If you do not own your own boat club toppers can be rented at a charge of £5 and Bahia £10 for the night. Booking can be arranged through the club office or this website or if out of hours an honesty box system will be in operation.
Sailors should be down early enough to be changed and ready to launch by 6.45pm. There are usually 2 to 3 races depending on the weather.
The aim of Sunday sailing is to allow children to have fun with their friends on the water developing their sailing skills that they have learnt.
Children should be at the club for 10am to allow time to register, get changed, help rig the boats and have a pre launch briefing aiming to be on the water for about 10.45am. They will be on the water for approximately an hour and a half and then when they come ashore they are expected to help wash down and de rig the boats and attend a short debrief. The instructor in charge will take both the pre- launch briefing and debriefing in the wet room.
Parents of younger children are expected to remain at the club while their children are out on the water or inform those in charge of another parent who is taking responsibility for their child during this period. Parents can make use of the club facilities during this period. We have tea and coffee is available for parents to help themselves and small donation is not essential but appreciated.
We are always in need of help from parents both on and off the water and we would encourage parents to get involved.
During the morning children will be divided into groups according to their ability. Those with no previous sailing experience will be taken out in a Bahia with an instructor (approximately 4 children to 1 instructor) and be allowed to experience the fun of being in a boat out on the water. They will learn the rudiments of sailing but this is not learning to sail and those who wish to learn more should attend the RYA training courses run by the club over the summer months.
Those who can sail and have completed RYA level 3 will be allowed to go out on their own or in pairs on a Topper. The emphasis will be on developing their skills sailing round a small course with a view to moving on to learning to race. Those who are more experienced will be able to further develop their racing skills and some short fun races will be run with a view to encouraging these children to enter into racing on Tuesday nights. At the end of the morning a short race will be held for all with a few fun prizes (not just for winners).
A registration fee will be charged a £20 per child for the season this is to cover boat repairs and end of season prizes.
Youth sailing hoodies will also be available this season, further information will follow.
We have invested in a gas BBQ and with parents help plan to cook hot dogs for the kids when they come off the water. Children will not be charged but if adults want to eat a small donation would be appreciated. I will be setting up a rota for parents to help with this.
Strangford Lough Youth Series
As part of Sunday sailing six of the clubs in Strangford Lough run a Youth Series. Each club holds a race day where a few short races are run. This is a fun event and children of all abilities are encouraged to take part. Last year it was very well supported by the young sailors and many prizes were won with the overall shield going to Strangford Sailing Club We have a club road trailer and hope to use this to transport club toppers to the various clubs. The Youth Series events for this year are on the Youth Sailing programme attached along with other sailing events that may be of interested .
We will keep you informed about the arrangements for each Youth Series event closer to the time
We have a SLYC Youth Sailing Facebook page, which we will use to keep you in touch with what’s happening within Youth Sailing and up coming events. We will also use as a means to let you know if Sunday sailing is cancelled due to the weather. If you have a Facebook page please like us.
